What is a Program Animal?
The Program Animal Online Website makes use of the definition of program animal that was developed by
the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). Program animals are defined as “non-human” animals
that are used outside their normal exhibit or holding areas and/or are intended to have regular
physical contact with the public within their normal exhibits.
Based on this definition, program animals would include any species on display in a petting zoo or
farm yard exhibit where the public is allowed to touch the animal, aquatic species used in touch
tanks, as well as animals that are used in formal and informal educational programs, demonstrations
and shows, both on and off-site.
